Hollywood Threatens the Internet Collage

Remember SOPA and PIPA, the “anti-piracy” measures that threatened to censor and even destroy the Internet? Remember how massive protests–online and in the streets–by Internet users everywhere forced the United States Congress to shelve and , and defeated their passing? Remember how we were all warned that and PIPA might soon be resurrected?

Well, SOPA and PIPA are NOT DEAD. They’re trying to creep in the back door.

Please read the following from this e-mail sent out by Demand Progress:

“It’s us versus THEM again.

Hollywood attorneys are trying to use the courts to circumvent Congress and implement a backdoor SOPA/PIPA scheme.

Fight Back: YOUR FILES ON Google, Dropbox, Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram, YouTube, Flickr, etc. and even your emails are in jeopardy.

We need to make sure the judge understands that his decision will affect millions of people.

Demand Progress is fighting back in the courts and standing up for Internet users. We are taking on the United States and the MPAA. Please click here to support our legal brief — the court will be hearing the case THIS WEEK.

BACKGROUND: One day after the Internet staged a massive blackout to protest ’s Internet censorship legislation (SOPA/PIPA), the United States responded by seizing millions of ordinary user files hosted on the popular website Megaupload.com.

With an aim of shutting down Megaupload and other Cloud-based hosting services (like Dropbox, YouTube or even your email provider), the government is trying to claim website operators should face decades in prison for the misdeeds of some of their users.

But while they pursue trumped up criminal charges against the companies’ founders, they are shutting down dozens of websites, and leaving ordinary Internet users without any way of retrieving their files.”

I don’t want them to start censoring things either.

I don’t think anyone outside of Big Content, Incorporated (BCCo) wants censorship to start happening, Alissa–which is why all of us must act. If you haven’t signed the petition yet, please do so as soon as you can; also, please share the petition site on your blog, or with your friends and family. Thanks very much for helping keep the Internet free of censorship!

Yes, it would. And it’s a lot closer to happening than most people realize…I hope you were able to add your signature to the petition to help stop it.

My 8yr old daughter just discovered this yesterday and for hours was freaking out saying “We have to stop them!” And she’s right!

It is, Jessica. And only we can stop it, by making our voices heard and our will known. So please continue to sign petitions, demonstrate against censorship, and write to your elected officials to urge them to keep speech free–on the Internet and everywhere else! Thanks very much for your comment.
