The Natural Mirror in Collage

Art is nature sped up and God slowed down.

—Malcolm de Chazal (1902-1981), Mauritian writer, painter, and visionary

In examining nature, we often see ourselves—or parts of ourselves—reflected in its order. An ancient philosopher held that “Man is the measure of all things.”

In recent times, visionary philosophers and artists have found a more reciprocal relationship between human beings and nature. Just as human concepts and functions are pressed into service to describe natural phenomena, those phenomena are also applied to explain the character and activities of humanity. We reflect nature as nature reflects us.

Unfortunately humans seem to be having a negative impact on nature which is surely being reciprocated. Perhaps if we do our best to live green nature may reward our endeavors.

Life never tends to be just one state or another. The mirror of nature is reflecting both of those realities, and the various “shades of gray[/green]” between them. We’re all on a continuum, doing the best we can with where we are, and slowly our consciousnesses are being raised to the need to adapt to nature rather than bend it to our will.
