The chart is a map; with its aid we locate and fix a point on the ocean, in the heavens, or at a crossroads in the city’s heart.

The compass is also a map, albeit a small one. The thirty-two points of direction that spider across the compass card, forming the Rose of the Winds, are more lasting than any geographic features drawn on other maps. Coastlines wash away, mountains erode, and lakes dry up; but the cardinal points of the compass remain unchanged in the mind and heart, awaiting their next use.
And we never truly understand any map of any region, until we have imposed the small map of the compass upon it.

Eric
That is weird I got a message on both occasions saying your website was offline without a link to return to it.
At least you got the comments in the end heheh!
Sorry, Steve! That’s the Internet for you: up one moment and down the next. Thanks for bearing with us.
Thank you for the picture. It’s life there, though more colorful than our pale days, yet comforting.
Thanks very much for visiting and leaving your kind comment, Tomas! I look forward to visiting your blog and looking at your new work.

Beautiful colors!
Thanks, Robin–glad you like them!
That’s pretty cool that the background has an element that repeats in the foreground.
Thanks, Alissa! That’s definitely what I was aiming for, and I’m grateful to you for mentioning it. I wanted to create a kind of visual vibration through repetition.
Beautifully written description and eye-grabbing collage!
Thanks, Aquariann! Have a great WW.
pretty amazing!
Thanks! Have a great WW.
Nice drawing. Rough weather ahead, but the compass still points north.
Thanks very much for the compliment; I wish it were a drawing, but it is a collage of engravings that were done in the 19th century. And you’re right: the compass still points north, thank goodness!
lovely colours and eye-catching. have a great WW.
Thanks very much–I hope you have a very happy WW!
So neat! Love the colours
Lately I’ve had trouble commenting on your WW posts

Thanks, Daryl! I appreciate your kind comment, and I’m glad you liked this piece.
Happy WW! Her eyes look as if they are saying “great not again.” As far as the rain, I wish we would get some.
I sincerely hope she’s not feeling that bummed out! As for the rain, I’d gladly give you some of ours, but the delivery system hasn’t been perfected yet. Sorry, but I hope you had a great WW.
Love the vintage woman in this one
Thanks very much, Helen!
Personally, I perceive A More Spiritual Connotation in this particular collage. To the left, I see a man of great spiritual faith who properly perceives The True Power Of The Macroverse - fully surrounding him… To the right, I see the modern man wielding his own umbrella to subjectively protect himself from the elements that he perceives as being primarily antagonistic… While The Compass Itself, points straight up between them; and indicates that neither of them are entirely correct in their own personal assumptions!
But, of course, I see spiritual things where others usually can’t….
Great Job, Eric!
Thanks for your thoughtful comment! I agree with you that this collage has an underlying spiritual meaning, as I feel many of them do; I don’t regard them as totally my creations, but rather as conversations with a Higher Power: a kind of co-creative give-&-take, with each of them having its own particular message to convey. I’m fascinated by your interpretation, and look forward to pondering it further.
Beautiful art and colors.
